3 /5 Jiro: UPDATE: The owner reached out to me personally after my review to address the issues and offered to make things right. While I won’t be taking him up on the offer, I genuinely appreciate the gesture and can see they’re making an effort to improve.
I was really excited to try Caché based upon all the reviews I had read, so on a recent visit to San Francisco I made a point to try it. Well, I was sorely disappointed. The menu was the same as I had seen online, and to be honest, I didn’t love what I saw, but I thought “oh but it must be good, because after all this is San Francisco and the bar is high.” We shared the yellow fin tuna appetizer thing, which was OK, but nothing special – their twist on it is a very lightly spicy ketchup like sauce that I didn’t care for, but my dining companion liked it. I had the pork tenderloin for my main, which was fine, but just fine. My partner had a clam dish, which I think technically was listed as an appetizer/sharing plate, which could have been good, but the sauce/broth was so unbelievable salty – in hindsight we should have sent it back. The atmosphere of the restaurant is cozy, and a bit tight, about what one would expect an innser-Sunset district restaurant. Service was pretty good, attentive, polite, and well-informed about the menu. The one highlight was the dessert: a strawberry merengue with basil and smatterings of balsamic vinegar – this was a good dish, interesting, good flavor combinations, and light enough to enjoy at the end of the meal. In short, I wouldn’t go back unless someone really wanted to do, and honestly I usually am not in that part of the city, as I typically stay downtown, so for me not worth the trek. Perhaps worth a try if you’re in that part of SF, but they need to work on their dish consistency, I do not think the clams were supposed to be the salty. Also, I didn’t find the menu that inspiring, tries to be too creative without a lot of thought – it needs some fine tuning.
