EMRE @ The Ava Hotel - Paso Robles

Rating: 4.2 /5
Dan Penkauskas We went to Emre at The Ava Hotel for the first time last night, New Years Eve, and had an outstanding experience. All four of us loved everything. (Background note: Both couples moved to Paso over ten years ago specifically for its rural location and the wine country vibe, so this type of restaurant is right in our wheelhouse). Firstly, the hotel and restaurant are beautiful in a elegant and spare style, not fussy or ostentatiously ornate. The large lobby was packed with folks out on the town for New Years Eve - too bad the rain put a damper on the bonfire in the park. We were quickly seated and our drinks arrived in only moments. We had both a server and an assistant server wait on us. Both were charming and very knowledgeable about the food choices and the amount to order. This was helpful due to the abundance small plates and food for the table that may have otherwise been confusing. Between the four of us we ordered the lamb kefka, the charred octopus, Moroccan carrots, crispy potatoes, whole branzino, and the Souvlakis with beef and prawn skewers. The only thing I didnt personally try was the branzino, but was assured by our friends that it was excellent too. The kefka, octopus, carrots, branzino, and Souvlakis were all grilled over a wood fire giving them a smoky charred flavor. All the items I ate were spicy in both senses of meaning - highly seasoned with wonderful complex Middle Eastern flavors and fairly hot spicy too. This was surprising as I had not experienced hot spicy in Middle Eastern food before. I love how the chef made this rather bold choice in seasoning and hope this trend continues in the future should the menu evolve over time. The background noise and lighting were both spot on. Even though there are lots of hard surfaces to reflect noise, you could describe it as lively and not excessive. All four of us could converse easily. The lighting was similarly dialed in properly - subdued, but no one felt the need to light up a menu with a phone. Emre is an excellent destination for fine dining. Certainly unique in Paso Robles, Im pretty sure nothing quite like it (food-wise) is available in either San Francisco or LA. If you like different assertive flavors, this is the place for you.

The Midway - Santa Cruz

Rating: 4.7 /5
Benjamin Ow My wife and I just finished an incredible dinner at The Midway. The atmosphere was casual and inviting and the service was friendly and attentive. The food was the star of the show. The menu was relatively small, but there was a wide variety of dishes that were clearly carefully thought out and based on the freshest seasonal ingredients. We started out with the house made sourdough bread and butter. The four generous slices of bread were hearty, with a soft inside and thicker crust. Very tasty. Next we had the chicory salad which was reminiscent of a gourmet Caesar salad with the most beautiful chicory leaves imaginable, crunchy breadcrumbs, and finely grated Parmesan. Fantastic dish. Next we had homemade pappardelle with black trumpet and chanterelle mushrooms and shaved brussel sprouts. The flavors were very subtle, but the really scrumptious. The fresh and bright flavors shined through. Next we had the Mt. Lassen trout on chickpeas and butternut squash. The trout skin had a wonderful char and the flavors of the chickpeas and butternut squash really combined nicely. We finished with the braised beef dish on mashed potatoes with roasted carrots, mushrooms, and a salsa verde sauce. This dish blew us away. The beef was perfectly braised so it was super tender, extra flavorful, and not fatty at all. The mashed potatoes, roasted carrots and mushrooms paired perfectly with the beef and the salsa verde took the wonderful dish to a new level. In summary, this is the best meal we’ve had in Santa Cruz in a very long time. The quality of the ingredients and preparation was top notch and all of the dishes were reasonably priced. We can’t wait to go back again soon!

Rise + Roam Bakery and Pizzeria - Carmel-By-The-Sea

Rating: 4.4 /5
Alexander Winfield Pretty decent bakery. We did not get pizza because we came in the morning, but our breakfast options were pretty good and the pastries we got were pretty good. The inside has plenty of seating for parties of all sizes. I got the breakfast burrito and honestly it was just okay but I enjoyed it none the less. The staff was a little cold but other than that it was good.

Rosas Cocina - Sutter Creek

Rating: 4.3 /5
Tawny Pena-Parsons **⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | An Explosion of Flavor at Rosa Cocina** Just tried the **Pork Belly Elote Bowl** at Rosa Cocina and *wow* — absolutely incredible! Every bite was packed with bold, smoky, perfectly balanced flavors. The pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender with just the right crispy edges, and the roasted corn, creamy elote-style, brought everything together with a slightly sweet, tangy kick. Seriously, I could eat this every day. And don’t even get me started on the **spicy margaritas** — the perfect combo of heat and citrusy zing. They’ve got just enough kick to keep things interesting without overpowering the flavor. Definitely one of the best spicy margs I’ve had in a long time. If you haven’t been to Rosa’s Cocina yet, go hungry — and don’t skip the pork belly bowl!

Kevin Shebley Ate at Valentinos. We had 3 different meals that were cooked to purrrfection. I had the steak and eggs. The steak was purfect. The eggs purfect, the hash browns were the best I ever had cooked for me and the toast was cooked to purrrrfection. My sis had the spaghetti, shes Italian and she loved it. Michelle had the Indian fry bread with meat. She loved hers as well. I was very impressed with the quality of the food and the hospitality as well. I will always go back there now when I visit. Best meal on the lake.
