Kathleen Koechling I visited Maldaners for lunch twice during a recent trip to Illinois, and had terrific food both times. The service was helpful, professional and attentive. My sister told me to try the horseshoe sandwich, which originated in the area. It was humongous (even the smaller version, "ponyshoe" was huge), but delicious. The vegetarian version had loads of fresh, grilled veggies, topped with welsh rarebit, topped with several inches of French fries. The second time, I wisely ordered the Vegetable Stir Fry with green tea rice as recommended by my server. It was absolutely delicious. There were also several other tempting vegetarian options.
