4 /5 Pho Q: 11/3/25
When I pulled into the flying J truck stop in Rayville, Louisiana, for the night, I didnt know there was a Southern Barbecue restaurant across the street. I was planning on eating Wendys again.
I ordered the two meat plate with barbecue brisket and sausage. For my two sides, I ordered potato salad and fried okra. This came with a small container of barbecue sauce
I also ordered the 3 piece fried fish with coleslaw and Cajun rice. This came with a small container of tartar sauce.
The coleslaw tasted like shredded cabbage with mayonnaise in it. It was totally flavorless and unseasoned.
The Cajun rice tasted like it came out of a Zatarains box.
I dont like potato salad and I dont know why I ordered it. This potato salad was no exception.
The fried okra was good.
The three piece fried fish came with two hush puppies. They tasted very good and I wish I could ordered a few more.
The fried fish itself was perfectly cooked but it was completely unseasoned and flavorless. The tartar sauce definitely saved this one.
The brisket was on point! Perfectly cooked with a good smoky flavor. Tender and delicious. Im not sure if they sell this by the pound, but I would be willing to buy it that way. The barbecue sauce did enhance the flavor. But it wasnt needed.
Im not sure what kind of sausage this is. It tastes good though. I was expecting boudin when I ordered it. Guess I should have asked.
Basically their meats are on point. The sides are subject to interpretation. However, I did not try all the sides. I also saw beans on the menu. I dont know why I didnt order them. But if I ever stop here in Rayville, again, Im going to go back for that brisket. I would also like to try the chicken, ribs and the pulled pork.
This restaurant is clean and it was not busy at the time I was passing through. The employees were polite and courteous.
Update 12/23/25
I went back for some of them delicious smoked meats.
I ordered the game changer wings which are not smoked. They come in a barbecue sauce with sliced jalapenos and cheese melted on top. It was such a small amount of cheese. And it didnt really contribute to the flavor. My one complaint is that the bigger thicker wings were not cooked alll the way through. This order also came with a side of ranch dressing.
I also ordered a half pound of brisket and a half slab of ribs. I ordered the two meat plate with pulled pork and chicken. My two sides with this plate were beans and macaroni and cheese.
The wings themselves were delicious. This order was supposed to come with garlic bread which I did not receive.
I also received two large family size containers of potato salad that I did not order. I dont know maybe they read my last review and theyre doing this to punish me. I feel bad throwing food out but I couldnt find a homeless person to give it to.
Theyre not falling off the bone ribs. But the ribs are delicious. Tender, with an excellent smoky flavor. Both the brisket and the ribs were on point! No barbecue sauce is required.
And speaking of barbecue sauce, the barbecue sauce at this restaurant tastes excellent! But I got two very small containers of it. With all the meat I ordered, I only get this much sauce?
At the time I placed my order, (2:50pm) there was no dark meat, chicken available. It was still cooking. So I got the white meat chicken and pulled pork. Five hours and ten minutes before closing, and they still dont have any dark meat, chicken ready to serve? The pulled pork was a little dry, but it had really good smoky flavor. The chicken was juicy tender and delicious.
The beans were good.
The mac and cheese was not. It should be a crime to call this stuff they served me mac and cheese!
My overall recommendation? If you just stick to the meats and avoid all the sides, you should be good.
