Edgar’s Restaurant in the Castle - (Near Geneva, NY)

2 /5 Stryker Ostafew: Our waiter and the lady at the front desk were very friendly and that was the best part of our experience. We had to wait a very long time to order our food, even though the place did not look very busy. The food took a very long time to come, and since I had the prime rib I was expecting some fantastic meat, but it was below average and soggy. The best part was our appetizer, the deep fried octopus rings. The house soup was good, and my wifes salmon had good flavor, but the presentation for everything was below what I expected. We did get a nice seat by the window though and could see outside.

1 /5 Michele Domina: 7:30 Saturday night dinner reservation for our Anniversary.. it was AWFUL!! We were seated on the porch.. it smelled like spoiled something. Absolutely gross. We moved tables to overcome the smell. The windows looked like they had not been cleaned in 5 years. There were abandoned drinks on the ledge of the table as well. Seafood chowder was lukewarm, lacked flavor and came out in the cup- no plate or crackers.. for the price, you’d think they’d get the presentation aspect! Calamari came out cold. We asked for the sauce that went with it.. the “garlic aioli” was honestly mayonnaise- gross!! My Caesar salad came out next.. or should I say a heaping pile of cheese (no joke!!) with a few pieces of lettuce and bone dry of dressing. How do you screw up a Caesar salad?!! My hubs got the Delmonico- cooked medium rare.. it came out well and his mashed potatoes had this awful crust over them like they had been sitting for hours. My salmon was equally as bad.. Burt to a crisp on the outside (see picture) and RAW on the inside (I should have taken a picture!) I wanted to cry. They remade our food.. which we did not get until 9pm, steak was still overdone, potatoes were better, salmon was cooked ok. We got dessert on the house.. donut cheesecake- it was horrible and a lemon cream cake, not bad. The next morning we went for continental breakfast and our table from the night before was just as we left it complete with dirty dishes. disgusting! The server was nice enough, the manager felt bad. I should have read the other reviews before going there because the negatives are 100% accurate. The following morning we had continental breakfast.. we got there at 9:40, they closed at 10. There was 1 muffin, 1 bagel, 3 cranberry juices floating in a tub of water and a bunch of packaged donuts. The circuit popped when attempting to toast the bagel.

2 /5 Col Raimond: I took my wife for an overnight at Belhurst castle and the prix fixe dinner at Edgar’s to celebrate her birthday. They said they’d do something “extra special” to celebrate her. Course 1: soup. We upgraded to the French onion. It looked like French onion with the melted cheese but when you broke through the broth was…clear. They didn’t use beef broth. It was vaguely chicken flavored onion soup, which is terrible. Yuck. Course 2: salad. The Caesar was perfectly average with an oily dressing that tastes like it came out of a bottle. The description lists it as “creamy.” It also lists cherry tomatoes and grated Parmesan and those weren’t around either. My wife had the berry spinach salad. The raspberry “vinaigrette” was heavy, and cloyingly sweet. Again, tasted bottled. There were no candied pecans. Course 3: I got the burrata pasta. The pasta was fine but the chicken was so dried out it was uneatable. My wife got the got the flank steak. It was nearly too tough to eat. And the “chimichurri”?! It tasted like boxed frozen spinach thawed and smeared on top of the steak. It tasted like sadness and loneliness. This supposedly came with sautéed balsamic glazed pearl onions which ended up tasting like frozen and microwaved pearl onions. The brown butter whipped sweet potatoes were just regular mashed sweet potatoes reheated and served using an ice cream scoop. Is this what eating in a nursing home is going to be like for us someday?? It is, isn’t it?? Course 4: dessert. My wife got the chocolate torte cake - it tasted like it was basically a piece of fudge: super sweet. I got the churro cake, which was decent though a touch stale. Bread: lovely! Came with 3 house made butters - by far the best thing they serve there. I imagine it’s embarrassed by the other food. When I went to the restroom, I saw that the plates are brought from wherever the kitchen is located and set in the little hallway near the dining room with those little clear steam covers you see on hospital meals. Wine pairing: fine. Except they forgot the wine with the dessert. Service: I honestly couldn’t tell you who our server was at this place. There was a woman who came over when we were first seated and took our order – I’m guessing it was her. We didn’t see her for so long that we had to ask another server for water. The last time we saw her was the start of the salad course. Lots of folks jumped in to drop off wine, clear plates, drop off plates, etc. No one ever seemed to notice that we ate less than 1/3 of anything except the salads and the churro cake (other than to ask if we wanted a box). When we told a man with an eye patch (whose name we sadly don’t remember) that we didn’t receive the wine for the dessert course, he brought us each a glass of our favorite wine from the list, which was super thoughtful. He and a woman named Colleen were the most helpful folks who came by our table: they were friendly, helpful, and attentive. Finally, it’s worth mentioning (though it should be obvious by now) that they did absolutely nothing for my wife’s birthday. I even mentioned to the first server who came to our table that we were celebrating a birthday just in case no one told her. We spoke to the manager who was very apologetic and stated that we were supposed to have multiple “quality checks” along the way. She seemed unconcerned that whoever was our actual server failed to do “quality checks” and very concerned that Colleen didn’t…that one time she was sent to our table to grab plates. The manager told us she would adjust the bill “as much as she could.” We ended up getting one dinner free and the glasses of wine with dessert taken off the bill. It was still over $100. We really really hope the tip we left was split with everyone who served our table. The entire experience took nearly 2.5 hours. I would absolutely not recommend bringing someone here to celebrate their birthday. I mean, unless you really don’t like the person.

5 /5 Cherie Watson: Had a great anniversary dinner, prime rib was so delicious with a rosemary crust! Being the Belhurst Castle is an enchanting setting. We booked the night in the castle so had access to explore all 3 floors as well as grounds. Highly recommend for a special experience. Fyi- castle bed rooms do not have central air, so may be a little warm, but hey thats castle charm!

1 /5 Nicole Tedesche: Ambiance is beautiful. The rest fell flat. Christmas Eve dinner menu was a prix fix menu with choices of one glass of wine, bread ,butter,soup, salad, entree, dessert, & coffee I chose the French onion soup which was just ok lacked any sort of flavor no salt or other flavor present. For a salad I had the Caesar salad some of the salad was rusted barely no dressing on it asked if we could have more dressing. The wine was overtly sweet I prefer a semi dry wine the one they gave us was too sweet to go with the food options. The entree I had was the burrata pasta. We literally just got our salad and then the entree came out immediately timing was clearly off. Had to push the salad aside to avoid the entree getting cold. One bite of the pasta the sauce was not good at all. I had to ask if I could instead have pasta with butter garlic sauce on it again no seasoning whatsoever on the entree just like the soup no flavor no seasoning. The dessert was gross tasted old the oil based whipped topping was gross. I hardly ate any of the food I tasted it all only thing I finished after adding salt and pepper was the soup. I don’t even think the French onion soup had sherry in it. It definitely had no salt, pepper or any other seasoning in it. Please season and taste the dishes when cooking. This is one of the first things they teach, I went to a cooking school in Rochester NY as well as attended the CIA in Hyde Park NY. Our waitress was not very concerned about checking on us or asking if we needed anything. She was just there to drop off items at the table clearly. She was not very friendly, just generic and basic. She also had no knowledge of menu items when I asked about menu items and alerted her of my food severe allergies. She basically did not care obviously did not care about my food allergies did not care to be at work. I guess I had a different expectation in my mind than what I actually received. I won’t be back and won’t recommend it to anyone who asks for a recommendation for dinner locations. The bread and water were the best thing here.
