5 /5 Cynthia Clark: We live in Buffalo, TX, and the closest cat groomer we could find was in Mexia. We’d driven through there several times, but never stopped. We dropped our cat off and asked the girls there about a good place for lunch while we waited. Countryside Cafe was recommended. They weren’t wrong. The place isn’t fancy or upscale, but we like simple, down-home places the best. The waitress greeted us immediately and was pleasant and helpful the entire visit. My husband had the country fried steak with mashed potatoes and okra. He said the meat was very tender and moist, and he loved the mashed potatoes because they had real lumps of potato in them. He said the sweet tea was very good, too. I had the jalapeño fried chicken sandwich and fries. The fries were delicious but the sandwich was amazing! The batter had just the right amount of jalapeño in it - enough to feel it in your mouth, but not so much that your mouth burns. The chicken was moist and tender, easy to eat. (My husband and I suggested to the waitress that they may want to consider offering a jalapeño chicken fried steak or chicken for those of us who enjoy a bit of spiciness). And the prices were very reasonable. Anyway, if we’re in Mexia again, we’ll definitely go back.
