3 /5 Love Box Studios: My mom recommended I try this place while I was visiting from out of town. Unfortunately, my experience with the service really put a damper on things.
I tried making small talk with who I later found out was the owner, but she was very short with me (couldn’t even give a polite chuckle at my jokes) .When it came time to order, after my mom order it came across as dismissive.
When I came back to ask for hot sauce, I was met with more snark. The owner said flatly, “We have a really hot habanero” Not “Do you like spicy stuff? Want to try it?” Nothing just quick response in a way that felt like I was bothering her. Then the chef chimed in, “Be careful what you ask for,” which sounded less like a playful warning and more like they wanted me to regret asking. Neither of them ever said thank you or showed basic hospitality.
The food itself was good, the habanero salsa was flavorful and spicy as expected, and the chicken sausage stood out as especially tasty. But the lack of warmth and courtesy overshadowed it.
As a Black woman, it’s disheartening when another woman of color is dismissive and rude to me, especially when I mentioned I was visiting and trying to support the business. In this economy, every customer counts. A smile, a thank you, or even just a little kindness goes a long way.
