1 /5 Jason Schwartz: I had unrealistically high expectations of Cajun Kitchen Cafe. And was severely disappointed. The ambience was moderately cute enough. Mind you, I’ve tasted authentic cajun cuisine of the proud people where the saints go marching in. As a patron of this Cajun Kitchen Cafe, I wanted to go marching out, and I want my Sunday morning back. From the start, I wanted Cafe Au Lait. Did they serve it? Unfortunately, the answer is nay. I settled for H2O and scanned the menu. And to my dismay, I saw what looked to be regular food with a few select items of Cajun-ness. We ordered the beignets, which were hidden in the upper corners of the menu not on proud display. Something felt off, yet we ordered them and asked them to be brought out at the end. Because it’s dessert at the end of the breakfast. Instead they came out before our food. We sent it back. The waiter came back with our order and lo and behold the same exact beignets. They were covered in powdered sugar. Hmm, okay. That seems pretty standard. However, much to our chagrin, the “beignets” were puffy french toast things that seemed like something you could get from Costco and microwave. The meal itself we got the Ventura Red Fish. It was flavored with blackened Cajun-ness. And bared an uncanny resemblance to run-of-the-mill tilapia, which you can also find in the frozen food section of Costco. Our eggs were pretty basic which we enhanced by adding the flavor that was available on the table. Everything else was pretty “mid” at best. Sorry, CKC. Not for me. Not for those in my party. Sorry.
