3 /5 yumi yamamoto: I was instantly drawn in by the inviting menu posted outside this charming split-level establishment. It features a small, street-level three-top area above what appears to be the main downstairs dining room/entertainment area. The atmosphere of the restaurant reminds me of a movie scene from the roaring 20s and the Jazz Age.
Initially, I was seated downstairs, but I quickly found the jazz music to be excessively loud. While I imagine the volume would be acceptable on a busy night, it simply carried too much in the nearly empty space (save for one large group). I politely asked to move and was grateful to relocate to one of the street-level tables upstairs.
The three staff members upstairs were kind and personable. I wish they had been my server. They created a warm, welcoming vibe.
My order was simple: a salad and a pizza. Despite the long wait time, I was still excited to try the food. The salad was fresh, and the pizza was truly fantastic.
Unfortunately, the superb food was overshadowed by the service. I got unlucky, my waitress acted as if I were an inconvenience, never made eye contact, and seemed determined to avoid the table. When the food was delivered, she mumbled a few words, practically dropped the plates, and quickly retreated downstairs. Didnt ask if I needed anything.
The final interaction was really awkward. Upon presenting the check, she had automatically pre-set the tip to over 20%. I almost laughed at the disconnect. I adjusted the tip to 10%. This finally prompted a reaction: she looked me in the eye, clearly puzzled, and asked if I didnt like the food.
I confirmed the food was "great" but the service was lacking, she flippantly turned around and mumbled something in a foreign language toward the upstairs staff. Thankfully, one of the personable upstairs team members noticed and sincerely asked if everything was okay. I explained the situation, feeling reassured that my feedback landed with someone who genuinely cared about the customer experience.
The kitchen deserves a five-star rating; the food is worth seeking out. I wish I recommend the dining experience fully. On a weekend, this would be a great place with entertainment and food. For me, service matters just as much as the quality of food.
