4 /5 Janette L.: My experience at J. Alexander’s was overwhelmingly positive, especially when it came to the food. We ordered the smoked salmon dip, the Mexico City spinach queso, the Maui steak, the filet mignon, and the Very Best Chocolate Cake. Every dish was exceptional. The salmon dip, which I initially hesitated to try, ended up being the standout—rich, flavorful, and surprisingly addicting. The tortilla chips were served hot and perfectly crisp. Both steaks were cooked to an ideal temperature and required almost no additional seasoning. The quality and execution genuinely tasted homemade, and I have absolutely no complaints about the food.
The interior of the restaurant is warm and inviting, with dim lighting and a beautiful barn-style ceiling that creates a comfortable atmosphere. However, a few aspects of the service and environment fell short. Our server was polite but not very attentive; we did not receive silverware until we asked, and each time she dropped something off, she hurried away before we had the chance to request anything else. It also seemed that larger tables received more of her attention, as she spent noticeably more time interacting with them.
Additionally, the windows in the dining area appear to have a draft coming through the lower seals. You can feel cold air coming in when placing a hand near them, which made the seating area slightly chilly throughout the meal. Addressing this would significantly improve the comfort of the space.
Overall, J. Alexander’s delivers outstanding food and a memorable dining experience. With a bit more attentiveness from the service staff and some maintenance to the seating area, it would easily be a five-star visit.
