1 /5 CC: I recently hosted a birthday party at Hook and Reel for a group of nine, and unfortunately, our experience was marred by horrifically rude service. From the moment we arrived, the waitress displayed a negative attitude, making us feel like an inconvenience whenever we made a request. We asked for extra sauce for our crab boils, but instead received an extremely spicy version that several guests couldn’t handle. When I brought this to her attention, she reacted rudely, rolling her eyes and walking away instead of addressing the mix-up. Additionally, my drink was served in a glass that had a noticeable crack. When I pointed this out, she again treated me as if I were being unreasonable, albeit reluctantly switching the glass for a new one. To make matters worse, the restaurant automatically added a gratuity charge due to our party size. While I understand that this is a common practice, I believe that respectful service should accompany such a gratuity. It felt unfair to reward someone for such poor service. When I voiced my concerns, she simply stated that the policy was posted on the door, but having a policy does not excuse being rude to customers. As for the food, it left much to be desired, which further contributed to our disappointing dining experience. I understand that every establishment can have an off night, but the combination of unsatisfactory service and mediocre food has convinced me that I wont be returning to Hook and Reel in the future.

1 /5 Martin Miller: The bathrooms were “kinda clean,” but honestly still looked sloppy with pieces of toilet paper scattered across the stall floors. It just didn’t give off a good first impression. Our waitress made the experience even worse; every time we asked for something simple, she acted annoyed, sighed loudly, and walked away with an attitude like we were bothering her The crab I ordered wasn’t any better. It came out dry, lacked flavor, and definitely wasn’t worth the price. What really topped everything off was finding out they force a $15 tip on the bill. A tip should depend on the service you receive, and with the way our waitress acted, she didn’t deserve that kind of automatic gratuity at all; the overall vibe just felt unprofessional and unwelcoming. For the price we paid, the quality and service should’ve been way better. I won’t be returning here, and honestly, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for a good dining experience.

Our waiter was incredibly kind and helpful, and the food — especially the shrimp — was amazing! I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in Midland!

The waitress treated us like an inconvenience whenever we made a request like asking for cutlery as there was not any on the table when we were seated. We went without refills because she was too preoccupied with her phone. To make matters worse, the restaurant automatically added a gratuity charge for our party size, which felt unwarranted given the poor service. While I understand that policies exist, respectful service should accompany them. The food itself was also disappointing. Due to this experience, I won’t be returning to Hook and Reel.
