3 /5 Alvin Ma: Whoever said this place is on par or better than House of Prime Rib simply does not have patience to wait for a table. They are delulu.
San Mateo Prime is incomparable to House of Prime Rib. If you come here, don’t try to compare this with house of prime rib. If you want a good overall prime rib experience, go to house of prime rib. If you just want a nice dinner with prime rib, no wait, and okay sides, this is the spot for you.
Let’s start with the good stuff. What was decent here was the prime rib, garlic mash potato, and creamed corn. The crème brûlée dessert was also good. Overall, nothing to brag about, but it was decent.
Now what makes me not want to come back would be the salad and popover.
The salad was served poorly. It’s tasted like lettuce drowned in heavy thousand island dressing, all made in bulk in the morning. What we got was a sad soggy salad.
The popover tasted like undercooked pound cake. Crispy on the outside, mushy and raw in the inside.
Creamed spinach was too heavy for me, but I’d say this is an acquired taste and I’m not going to neg on it. But it was not for me. I also got the garlic noodle and it was good, but nothing to go crazy over.
Overall, the meal was okay, service was attentive, and the atmosphere was good for a nice date.
